Taking stock of the group of death of the European Cup: the strongest in 2020, C Luo was hit three times, and Holland was out

With Spain, Italy, Croatia and Albania drawn into Group B, Euro 2024 continues the tradition of a group of certain death at the European Championship.

Compared to the super Group of Death at Euro 2020, this time the Group of Death looks less "dead".

At the 1996 European Championship, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic and Russia were placed in the Group of death, and the Czech Republic beat Italy 2-1 in the second round, allowing the former to unexpectedly join Germany in the knockout stage and eventually meet the final.

With the "golden goal" scored by Bierhoff, Germany finally won the European Cup.

At Euro 2000, the Netherlands, France, Czech Republic and Denmark, four former European Cup winners, entered the Group of Death. As a result, Denmark finished bottom of the table with losses in all three games, while the Netherlands, who qualified for the knockout stage, failed to reach the semi-finals, and France won the title behind Italy.

At Euro 2004, Portugal, Spain, Russia and Greece entered the Group of Death.

Surprisingly, Greece not only defeated the host country Portugal in the opening game, but also overcame all the way and finally won the championship after defeating Portugal again in the final.

At Euro 2008, the Netherlands, Italy, France and Romania were drawn into the Group of Death.

Shockingly, France, who were runners-up at the 2006 World Cup, suffered humiliating exits in all three of their group games. Among the knockout rounds, the Netherlands and Italy also performed poorly, and both were eliminated in the last eight.

At Euro 2012, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark entered the Group of Death.

This time, the humiliating exit became the Orange Army, they also lost three games in the bottom of the group, and Germany and Portugal, who advanced to the knockout stage, also stopped in the last four.

For Euro 2020, France, Portugal, Germany and Hungary have created a super Group of death, with the top three teams having won the previous five tournaments.

As a result, France, Germany and Portugal advanced together, but the latter two teams were eliminated by Belgium and England in the Round of 16.

Four years later, the Netherlands and Italy became the third and fourth tier teams respectively, while Italy was drawn in the same group as Spain, Croatia and Albania, so that the 2024 European Championship continued the tradition of the group of death at the European Championship.
