Mbappe makes history

France coach Deschamps said at a news conference after the World Cup final that Mbappe won the golden boot and made history, but not in the way he had hoped.

The French team came so close to winning the championship, but unfortunately, could not hold on to the end.

In France's final against Argentina, Mbappe, who is not yet 24 years old, scored a hat-trick and twice equalised, saving France's life to penalties and scoring the first penalty in the shootout.

He scored eight goals in seven games to win the Golden Shoe award, becoming the first French player to do so in 64 years.

He makes history and is a very creative player. Today, unfortunately, he has not achieved them in the way he would have liked.

We failed to win the final victory, and he still felt sad when he accepted the prize.

France were 2-0 down in the first half and Deschamps did not wait until half-time to take off two of his leading players Giroud and Dembele, replacing them with Thuram and Mouani.

I wanted to make a change and there is no blame here on Giroud or Dembele, they worked hard.

I just see that they are not at 100 per cent and we need to adjust Mbappe's position at the same time.

Overall we were not at our best tonight, especially with a lack of energy against such a strong opponent.

Some young players, although lacking international experience, injected fresh energy into the team and kept the game in suspense until the end, but we were unable to realize our dream.

There were media reports before the game that a number of players in the French team were "infected with the virus" and were not well. Deschamps did not say which players in the squad were affected.

Maybe the players are affected physically and mentally, but I have no worries about the players who played tonight. We just had very little time off and were a little tired, but that's no excuse.

We didn't show the same energy as we did in the last few games, in the first 60 minutes we weren't fully committed.

Deschamps also gave a cautious assessment of the referee's handling of the night. I don't want to say too much about it, the referee can make it better or worse.

Before the final, Argentina was lucky. I'm not saying they got 'help' from the referee, they totally deserved it, congratulations to them.

Deschamps remains optimistic about the future of the French team. French football is deep and has always had a lot of young players with talent, potential and ability.

What we need to do is build successful teams. Four years from now, maybe some of the players are older now, but there will still be young players coming into view, it is not a problem.**
