Six things you should know about spring and summer series releases

From floral-print miniskirts to '90s-inspired minimalist dresses, here are seven things you need to know about the hot brand's summer collaboration collection

In a sea of loungewear and sweatpants, Spanish brand Gimaguas has undoubtedly produced summer 2020's Instagram hit dress: an orange and magenta knit halter design and a replica of this crop top from the Ete collection.

The 25-year-old twin sisters, Sayana and Claudia Durany, have gained fame for their sun-drenched sensibility and fast-selling outfits.

Gimaguas, which means "twins", is a brand the pair set up in 2016 and has become a hit on edgy Gen Z items such as DJ group Simi Haze and resale sites such as Depop, retailing for £400.

Claudia graduated in fashion business from Marangoni College and Sayana in finance from Regent's University in London, and thanks to their recent Miami-inspired collaboration with New York-based graphic designer Tessa Forrest, their summer reign is far from over.

"We've been following Tessa's work for a while, and we've noticed that she owns a few of our pieces and knows our brand - her approach to graphic design is a perfect fit with our brand."

Claudia tells Vogue via Zoom from her studio in Barcelona. After a few direct Instagram messages, the Gimaguas x Sublime collaboration series was launched. "[Instagram] is a new way for the fashion industry to collaborate and connect," she said.

The eight-piece, uplifting capsule collection took five months to make, and Claudia says, "It came naturally," We had a lot of time to think and critique, and as twins we had a tight bond, so we would balance each other out. In addition, being between the countryside and nature gives people an otherworldly feeling, which also inspires the concept of our work."

What's the result? Thigh-high miniskirts, square-necked dresses, and minimalist swimsuits were emblazoned with the hazy images of Forrest's dreamlike sunsets captured by photographer Marili Andre in the campaign.

Here are seven things you need to know about Gimaguas x Sublime's exciting summer collection and what the founders have planned for the brand.

  1. The series is an ode to East Coast nights

"We took a family trip to Miami early last year before the lockdown and fell in love with the city's sunsets. It reminds us of Barcelona by the sea, with its bright colors and bright architecture. We discussed and decided to create a collection inspired by Miami Beach, reflecting its sunny atmosphere. From miniskirts to sleek minimalist outfits, the silhouettes speak to a pleasant climate and warm summer nights."

  1. Social media became the catalyst for this collaboration

"We loved Tessa's work and her approach to graphic design, and we saw that she had several Gimaguas pieces, so we reached out to her on Instagram. Tessa was thrilled, too, so we proposed that she create two designs for our capsule collection, which also happened to be inspired by the sunset - our favorite time of day - and we wanted the line to reflect positive warmth, which echoed it.

  1. It's made entirely of eco-friendly fabrics

"The Sublime collection is made entirely from recycled polyester. We have always tried to reflect sustainability and organic elements in our collections, and now that raw material prices have fallen, sourcing ingredients is much easier and more affordable. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it took us two months to develop and procure ingredients, and we finally found a supplier in Barcelona."

  1. Community is the key to Gimaguas x Sublime

"It's important for us to work with people who believe in our projects and understand our brand, and Tessa is exactly that. This was her first costume collaboration, so naturally, everyone was thrilled to see the results. It takes all of us out of our comfort zone. We are always working with creative people from all walks of life, as long as they can align with our aesthetic. After all, that's what Gimaguas was built for - we want our platform to be a reflection of inspiring work, and that includes creating a real community."

Bella Hadid and Solange are their Muse

"We want women wearing Gimaguas to feel soughy, fresh and unique in our collection. We love to see fashion-forward women wearing our clothes. We envisioned many, many people wearing this collection, and we loved Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Solange Knowles. We think Iris Law is great too -- she's funny and super cute."

  1. You'll soon be designing for Gimaguas menswear

"We will be releasing our menswear collection in June, which includes a project with visual artist Ema Gaspar to encourage our consumers to submit T-shirt designs. We will also hold corresponding projects in the women's line."

  1. That's right, Ete dresses are coming back (finally)

"Each product is unique and each new one is as good as the previous ones. But we've been evolving. We continue to do a lot of work around the Ete collection with a lot of different alternatives to the original design, but there will be a little bit of change."
