What does the NBA Draft mean

The NBA Draft is an annual event to select new players for the NBA. At the draft, each of the 30 NBA teams can select young male players who want to join the NBA, and the selected players are called NBA rookies. All American players can automatically enter the NBA draft after they graduate from college, or they can declare for the draft between the time they graduate from high school and the time they finish college.

In January 2024, according to Woj, sources revealed that the NBA is still waiting for final approval from the players' union, but the 2024 NBA Draft is planned to be held in two days, planned to be held in Brooklyn, of which, the first round of the draft on June 27 and the second round of the draft on June 28.

Each year, the NBA sets two dates, and all players wishing to enter the draft must declare for the draft before the first date. After that, the NBA will set up training camps for those players to show their abilities and skills to the teams.

The second date, the day of the final declaration for the draft, is one week before the draft convention. Any player can decide before then to withdraw his name and not enter the draft that year. This date is important for college players, because if they don't officially declare for the draft until the final announcement day, they will lose their chance to study in college, regardless of whether an NBA team selects them.

Draft rules

The order in which players are selected is called the pick. The earlier a player is selected in the draft, the higher the pick, the higher his value.

The first player selected in the draft is often called the "No. 1" (first pick), and they are usually the best of all the players who enter the draft. The second player to be selected is called the "No. 2" and the third is called the "No. 2". After that, it is called the number in the order.

Just because a player is selected in the first round doesn't mean that player is destined to become a superstar in the future. Michael Jordan was the third overall pick in the 1984 draft, but he is widely regarded as the greatest player in NBA history.

The two players drafted before Jordan were Olajuwon, the "Big Dream", and Sam Bowie, who was eventually elected to the NBA Hall of Fame, but Sam Bowie ended his career because of injuries and did not make a difference. This shows that NBA draft picks are not necessarily directly related to the future development of players, and the players at the bottom of the draft are not necessarily worse than the players at the top.

According to the NBA draft age limit, players must be at least 19 years old to be eligible for the draft. As a result, many 18-year-old players who have finished high school will have to choose between a year in college or overseas to hone their skills and wait until they meet the age limit to enter the NBA stage.

The NBA wants to reduce the number of high school graduates who challenge the NBA before deciding whether they want to play in the NCAA.

If this situation continues to expand, the exciting degree of NBA games is bound to be greatly reduced. As a result, NBA officials insisted that NBA scouts leave high school campuses. Although the new age limit has caused a lot of backlash, it has also won some support.

The rules for American high school graduates to apply for the draft

A player who is resident in the United States and has completed high school may become eligible for the NBA Draft by giving written notice to the NBA 45 days prior to the start of the draft, after expressing his desire to forego college to continue his education.

Once the player is selected by any NBA team, if the player does not play for a college basketball team, then the player will become eligible to participate in the NBA Draft; If the player plays for a college basketball team, he may still be eligible for the NBA draft if he later renounces the opportunity to continue playing for a college basketball team; A player who has settled in the United States and completed high school, if not eligible for the NBA Draft and signed with a professional basketball team outside the United States, will be eligible for the next NBA draft.

Rules for overseas players entering the NBA draft

An overseas player is eligible for the NBA draft after reaching the age of 22, and an overseas player who has not played a college basketball team in the United States may be eligible for the draft before his or her 22nd birthday, provided that he or she is at least 18 years of age before the draft takes place.

He must give written notice to the NBA 45 days before the start of the draft expressing his desire to be eligible for the draft.

An overseas player who plays for a college basketball team in the United States during the season prior to the draft must either complete or abandon his college education.
