SONY Pictures has acquired the English-language rights to the Chinese comedy 'Hello, Li Huanying,' which was the world's highest-grossing film by an independent female director until recently surpassed by 'Barbie.'

I didn't make you happy once when I was your daughter.

My future daughter, I'll just keep her healthy and happy.

As far as I can remember, my mother was a middle-aged woman. So I always forget that my mother was once a teenage girl.

But my mom can't sew yet.

No matter how long it takes, the lines of "Hello, Li Huanying" will always move people. No one can escape this heavy tear gas!

The US media "Variety" describes this film that is popular in China in 2021 but unfamiliar to Americans:

The original film, directed by Jia Ling, will be released in early 2021. The film follows a young woman whose mother is fatally injured in a car accident and who travels back to the early 1980s, where she became good friends with the mother of her youth. She tried to give her mother a better life than she had before.

Jia Ling plays the young woman, while Zhang Xiaofei plays the young mother.

"Hello, Li Huanying" was released in February 2021, during the Spring Festival box office season, and grossed 5.41 billion yuan (about $841 million at current exchange rates), making it the third highest-grossing film of all time in China.

Variety's review called the film "an inspired shift in storytelling" and "a first-rate tear-jerker that will have audiences everywhere reaching for tissues."

At present, the Hollywood version of "Hello, Li Huanying" is still in the early stages of development, and the film is adapting the script. Only this information has come to light so far:

The English version of the film is in early development, with writer Laura Kosan working on the screenplay and production company Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Becky Sandman co-producing with Wenxin She (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood).

Jia Ling will also serve as executive producer.

Jia said: "I am looking forward to this collaboration and am glad that my story with my mother can be shared by more people. I believe that while each person's and mom's experiences are unique, the love in these stories is universal and something we can all relate to."
