News analysis: Why are Olympic medals presented at the Asian Games?

At the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium, attracting thousands of people's attention, Sister Che Yang stepped onto the podium. As the national anthem played, she could no longer hold back and tears welled up in her eyes.

On October 4th, Sister Che Yang shed tears at the award ceremony.

After the athletics competition at the Hangzhou Asian Games on the evening of the 4th, the Chinese Olympic Committee awarded medals to Su Bingtian, Xie Zhenye, Wu Zhiqiang, and Tang Xingqiang, who won the bronze medal in the men's 4x100m relay at the Tokyo Olympics, and to Che Yang Shijie, Liu Hong, and Lv Xiuzhi, who won the gold, silver, and bronze medals in the women's 20km race walk at the 2012 London Olympics.

Why award Olympic medals at the Asian Games? Why are these medals so late?

Late Medal

For the Chinese men's 4X100 meter relay team, this medal was "late" for two years.

At the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the Chinese men's 4x100m relay team, composed of Su Bingtian, Xie Zhenye, Wu Zhiqiang, and Tang Xingqiang, ranked fourth in the final, with Italy, the UK, and Canada finishing in the top three. After the game, the first player of the British team, Uja, was found to have violated anti doping regulations.

On February 18, 2022, the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that the silver medal won by the British team will be stripped.

On May 19, 2022, the International Olympic Committee held an executive committee meeting in Lausanne to announce that the Chinese men's 4x100m relay team in athletics won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics as a substitute.

For the girls who raced, these three medals waited for 11 years. When the three girls received the medals, the outer skin of the box containing the medals had worn and peeled off.

On August 11, 2012, Sister Che Yang was on the podium. On that day, in the women's 20 kilometer race walking competition at the London Olympics, Chinese athlete Qieyang Shijie won the bronze medal with a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes, and 16 seconds. Photo by Xinhua News Agency reporter Gesandawa

In the women's 20 kilometer race walking final of the 2012 London Olympics, Russian athlete Rashmanova won the championship, another Russian athlete Kanishkina won the silver, China's Cheyang Shijie won the bronze medal, Liu Hong finished fourth, Russian athlete Kirkputkina finished fifth, and China's Lv Xiuzhi ranked sixth. After the competition, Kanishkina and Kirkputkina were found to have used stimulants, and their performance at the London Olympics was immediately cancelled. Chinese athletes Che Yangshijie and Liu Hong won silver and bronze medals as substitutes, and Lv Xiuzhi's ranking rose to fourth.

And Rashmanova, who won the championship, was tested positive for doping in 2014, but the World Athletics Federation did not announce the cancellation of her performance at the London Olympics at that time.

Until March 2022, the Independent Track and Field Integrity Unit (AIU) of the World Athletics Federation announced that the gold medalist in women's 20 kilometer race walking at the 2012 London Olympics, Rashmanova, would have her performance cancelled due to doping issues.

In March of this year, the International Olympic Committee announced on its official website that the gold medal winner of the women's 20 kilometer race walk at the 2012 London Olympics had her performance cancelled due to doping issues. The gold medal has been reassigned to Chinese athlete Che Yangshi, while the silver and bronze medals have been reassigned to Chinese athletes Liu Hong and Lv Xiuzhi.
