The Forbes 2023 list of America's top 100 Charities is released

The 100th organization, the threshold for making the list, received $186 million in donations this year, up from $181 million in 2022.

For the first time in seven years, a respectable name is back on Forbes' annual list of U.S. charities: The United College of Blacks Fund (UNCF). The Foundation is a nearly 80-year-old, Washington-based nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to raise scholarships for historically black private colleges and universities. In 2023, UNCF raised $354 million in donations, nearly six times more than in the last year before the pandemic (2019), enough to place it at No. 58 on this year's list. Much of this growth comes from society's growing focus on racial equity issues and recognition of the role that historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) and UNCF play in promoting economic mobility.

Overall, recent earnings show that the top 100 charities in the country received more than $61 billion in private donations, up 4%, even though overall charitable Giving to the more than 1 million nonprofits in the country fell 3%, according to the Giving USA Foundation. This reflects the importance of branding for nonprofits, with organizations on Forbes' Top 100 list of U.S. charities receiving one-eighth of all U.S. charitable giving. The 100th organization, the threshold for making the list, received $186 million in donations this year, up from $181 million in 2022.

Our list, which reflects the income and expenditure of US charities in the most recent fiscal year, is based solely on the amount of private donations they receive. Government grants, service income and investment income are not included, but total income for each organization is indicated. The full list classifies donations by purpose, such as meeting domestic needs, international needs, promoting health and children's causes. The name of each charity links to more data, including its financial efficiency ratio and the salaries of its highest-paid people.
