According to the High-Tech Industry Research Institute (GGII) data, China's lithium battery storage shipments in 2022 are 130 GWh, which means that the production capacity of Tesla's super energy storage factory is equivalent to one-third of China's lithium battery shipments in 2022.

Shanghai Lingang Management Committee official micro said that in the future, Tesla Shanghai energy storage super factory will produce super large commercial energy storage batteries (Megapack) to help grid operators, utilities and other more efficient storage and distribution of renewable energy.

More than 200 very large commercial energy storage batteries (Megapacks) can form an energy storage power plant that can store 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

The layout of Tesla's first energy storage gigafactory project outside the United States can be traced back to a year ago.

On April 9, 2023, Tesla signed a contract with the Lingang New area on the Tesla energy storage Gigafactory project.

On December 22 of that year, Tesla held a land signing ceremony with the Lingang New Area Management Committee in Shanghai, announcing the opening of the Tesla energy storage gigafactory project.

It is reported that each unit of the Megapack, which will be manufactured by Tesla in Shanghai Lingang, can store more than 3.9MWh of energy, which can meet the electricity demand of 3,600 households for one hour, and can meet the needs of large power projects from 1MWh small micro-grid to GWh+ level.

According to the "2024 Global Energy Storage Industry Development Blue Book" released by the industry consulting institute, the global lithium energy storage system shipments in 2023 are about 192GWh, of which the top five companies in shipments are Sunshine Power, BYD, Tesla, CRRC Zhuzhou, Fluence, and Tesla ranks third.

Tesla's energy storage business has grown rapidly in recent years.

According to the official micro message released by Pudong, beginning in 2015, Tesla launched Megapack and Powerwall and other products in the United States, respectively for large industrial and commercial energy storage and home energy storage markets. Tesla energy storage products are present in more than 65 countries and regions around the world, with more than 1,500 sites in operation.

With a total deployment of more than 10 gigawatt hours (GWh), the market demand is huge. In 2023, Tesla's total energy storage installed capacity reached 14.7 gigawatt hours (GWh), an increase of 125%,

more than double that of 2022, and the company's energy generation and storage business profits almost quadrupled in 2023. In the first quarter of this year, installations reached a record 4.1 gigawatt hours (GWh).

The rapid growth in the installed capacity of energy storage products is also reflected in financial statements.

Gross profit from Tesla's Energy generation and storage business in 2023 reached $1.141 billion, nearly four times the previous year's $288 million.

The company expects that energy storage installations will continue to grow in the future, and energy storage revenue is expected to exceed the vehicle business.

Tesla released the first quarter of 2024 financial report, Tesla energy generation and storage business revenue hit a record high of 1.635 billion yuan, an increase of 7%.

"I've been predicting for years that the energy storage business would grow much faster than the electric vehicle business, and it's happening," Musk said on the fourth quarter 2023 earnings call.

"For Tesla, electric vehicles are the basic carrier to achieve applications, and the purpose is to integrate key technologies in the fields of electric vehicles, energy storage products, artificial intelligence and robotics, forming a closed-loop integration of hardware and software."

Tesla layout energy storage why choose China to build a factory?

Wang Peng, an associate researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, told reporters that China, as the world's largest new energy vehicle market and a potential energy storage market,

has provided a broad space for development for Tesla. In addition, China has significant advantages in the battery supply chain, and Tesla can use this system to increase production and reduce costs.

Zhan Junhao, a well-known strategic positioning expert and founder of Fujian Huace brand positioning Consulting, said in an interview that Tesla chose to build a factory in China to lay out its energy storage business, mainly based on various considerations.
