Major scandal unraveled

Hundreds of pages of unsealed documents from a lawsuit related to accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein were publicly released Wednesday. This is from the first set of documents unsealed by court order on December 18, 2023, with more expected in the coming weeks. The documents, including material that has not yet been unsealed, are expected to include nearly 200 prominent individuals, including some of Epstein's accusers, prominent businessmen, politicians and others.

Much of the information from the first batch of documents has already been released through media reports and other court proceedings. Epstein's former girlfriend Gislaine Maxwell has been charged with involvement in Epstein's sex trafficking. "She has always vigorously maintained her innocence," her lawyer said in a statement on Wednesday. The documents contain excerpts from the testimony of Maxwell and Virginia Roberts Giffre. There was also the testimony of Johanna Scherberg, who described some of Prince Andrew's behaviour in the documents.

Prince Andrew and Virginia Giuffre previously reached an out-of-court settlement in a sexual abuse lawsuit against Prince Andrew, according to a court filing by the prince's lawyers on Tuesday. Andrew denies the charges against him.

As previously reported, several high-profile names are mentioned in the deposition transcripts, including Andrew and former U.S. President Bill Clinton. Scherberg recalled in her 2016 deposition that Epstein had talked to her about Bill Clinton.

A Clinton spokesman confirmed in 2019 that the former president had flown on Epstein's private jet, but said Clinton knew nothing of the financier's "horrific crimes."

A Clinton spokesman reiterated the 2019 denial on Wednesday, telling CNN that "nearly 20 years have passed since President Clinton last had contact with Mr. Epstein." Clinton has not been charged with any crime or wrongdoing related to Epstein.

In her testimony, Johanna Scherberg also recalled a time when she and Epstein were on one of his planes and the pilot told them they needed to land in Atlantic City. Epstein then suggested they contact Donald Trump.

"Jeffrey said, 'Great, we'll call Trump, we'll go, I don't remember the name of the casino, but we'll go to the casino,'" Scherberg said. In the deposition documents, Trump is not accused of wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.

Giuffre alleged in her deposition that Maxwell directed her to have sexual contact with former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, Prince Andrew, tech guru Marvin Minsky, and famous French model scout Jean Luc Brunel, among others.

There are still three unnamed people in the same part of that testimony. Giuffre alleged that Maxwell instructed her to have sex with an "unnamed prince," "the owner of a major hotel chain," and a name that had been removed entirely.

Epstein was indicted in 2019 on federal charges of running a sex trafficking ring in which he allegedly abused dozens of underage girls. Epstein committed suicide while in prison awaiting trial. Prosecutors in New York have charged Maxwell with sex trafficking involving multiple victims. She was convicted in 2021.

A puzzling relationship

In the midst of this accusation, one man deserves attention. American investor Glenn Dubin. Giuffrey claimed in the deposition that Maxwell instructed her to have sex with Glenn Dubin. But then, a spokesperson for Durbin said in a statement in 2019 when Giuffrey's allegations were made public, "Glenn and Eva Durbin [Glenn's wife] are outraged by the allegations made against them in unsealed court records and categorically reject them."

Glenn Dubin is a big money manager. In 1992, Dubin and partner Henry Sveka started Highbridge Capital with $32 million in initial capital, and by the end of 2010, the fund had $21 billion in assets under management, making it the sixth-largest hedge fund in the United States. In 2022, Glenn Durbin is ranked No. 1,513 on the Forbes 2022 World's Billionaires List with a fortune of $2 billion.

But in New York, the search for answers doesn't end there. Epstein had appeared in court in New York for years before hanging himself in federal prison.

But among his many relationships, one of Epstein's most puzzling was his relationship with billionaire hedge fund manager Glenn Dubin and his wife, Eva Anderson Dubin, founder of the Dubin Breast Center at the Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai Medical Center. The Doberns are one of Manhattan's most famous and powerful couples.

The three of them are very close. Anderson Dubin, a former Miss Sweden, dated Epstein for several years before marrying Dubin in 1994. Even after Epstein was convicted in 2008, the couple kept in touch with the registered sex offender, inviting him to Thanksgiving dinner at their Palm Beach home. The following year. Anderson Dubin also wrote an email to Epstein's probation officer stating that she was "100 percent comfortable with Jeffrey Epstein being around my children," who were both minors at the time.

Epstein and Dubin also had business ties. Epstein introduced Dubin to Jez Staley, who was then a senior executive at jpmorgan Chase and is now the CEO of Barclays, a big British bank. Epstein reportedly received $15 million in fees after jpmorgan acquired control of Durbin's hedge fund Highbridge Capital in stages beginning in 2004. Dubin also transferred some of Epstein's money (with Epstein as trustee) to at least two hedge fund managers - Dan Zwien and Joseph Cusnan - who had worked at Highbridge Capital before starting their own firm.
