But at this time, a sudden event broke Li Shiyu's arrangement: the Xi 'an Incident in December 1936. After the Xi 'an Incident, General Zhang Xueliang was put under house arrest, and the Northeast Army was leaderless, with great internal contradictions.

After careful consideration of the organization, it was no longer necessary for Li Shiyu to stay in Northeast China, so he was given a task to change his fate: go to Tianjin and find a way to enter Tianjin politics.
