On the evening of January 18, renowned fashion journalist, New York Times best-selling author, former Vogue creative director and editor-in-chief Andre Leon Talley (Andre Leon Talley) died at the age of 73, and the fashion world was in mourning.
With a career spanning more than four decades and stints at WWD, Interview, Vanity Fair, House & Garden and Vogue, Talley stood out in the ranks at a time when there was little diversity at top magazines.
He is a regular in the industry, known for his personality and presence as well as his love of vibrant kaftans.
In the final years of his career, he lent his fashion expertise to the Met Gala as Vogue's red carpet host and last year as the face of Ugg as a campaign star.
Many of Talley's close friends and collaborators in the fashion industry have begun paying tribute to the late journalist on Instagram, sharing memories of Talley and honoring his legacy.
Fashion designer Jeremy Scott shared a video of him and Madonna at the 2017 Met Gala, when they were interviewed by Vogue's Talley.
"He was larger than life and full of life at the same time," Scott wrote. "The legendary status of fashion and pop culture pedigree also supports it.
Freeland, Warhol, Lagerfeld, Wintour, I grew up watching him do interviews on TV and in magazines about these series, and I remember how surreal it was when he and Anna Wintour showed up to hunker down in my second-floor apartment in what was then the dirtiest neighborhood to go to Paris to see a preview of my first series.
I remember sitting between him and Karl in the Chanel office a few years later, while Karl was doing couture. Always witty, always with the latest gossip, always with a smile on your face."
Designer Rick Owens shared a similar memory of Talley on Instagram, Posting a video of the pair with the caption: "In 2000, Andre Leon Talley must have just looked at the number I listed and called me out of the blue on my landline.
Los Angeles rang on the phone: "Is this Rick Owens?" I'm Andre Leon Talley, and I've just seen your dress in Henry Bender's window, and you must meet Anna. That's how I got started."
Diane von Furstenberg shared several file photos of herself with Talley with the caption: "A fashion giant has passed away. Rest in heaven, dear Andre Leon Talley."
