How to become a model

How do you establish yourself as a model in today's highly connected digital world of social media and social activities?

What makes a model successful in today's world? Over the past few decades, this question has undoubtedly become easier to answer. In the 1990s, supermodels' age, long legs and powerful attitude were key. In the 21st century, lithe figures and silent MUSES are everywhere.

However, as the lines between models, influencers and activists become increasingly blurred, what is a real model these days?

Social media has certainly changed the boundaries of the modeling industry. In an age of social activism, Instagram, Weibo and Tiktok have given models a platform to express their voice, individuality and, in some cases, a reason to fight.

What is the first step to becoming a model?

Jowitt points out that "the Association of British Fashion Model Agents, an affiliate of the British Fashion Council, is a good place to start, where you can find a list of registered agencies and plenty of information about becoming a model."

"Once you've found a few agencies you like and think you fit the bill, then I'd recommend coming to London to visit them sometime." All good brokerage firms have regular reception hours and will arrange for a broker to meet you. You'll get hospitality, advice and maybe an invitation to join the company."

While it's naturally exciting to get an offer from a brokerage, it's wise to hedge your risk.

"All agencies have different atmospheres," Jowitt advises. "Look at a few companies instead of just accepting the first one."

Also, it's crucial to do deep research and be savvy: if a modeling agency is going to charge you, you should just walk away.

"If you do visit a few different agencies and they all turn you down, you might be better off reconsidering other careers rather than continuing to look," Jowitt says. "There are a lot of disreputable agencies that will charge you a franchise fee and let you make unnecessary investments that won't get you any work at all."

What are the main requirements for a model today?

When it comes to modeling, looks aren't everything.

Jowitt said, "There are obvious height and body type requirements for models, but just having long legs, a light body and good looks are not the whole story. Today, models have to go far beyond these requirements to have a successful and long career. They need to be hardworking, enthusiastic, flexible, sociable, and able to get into performance mode at any time. They wouldn't even be able to enjoy the holiday if there was a filming schedule!"

What are the different opportunities in the modeling industry today?

Jowitt points out that the rise of the Internet and social media has really changed what is required of models. "There are more short models today than ever before and they are making a lot of money! Historically, short girls have tended to be beautiful. With the rise of e-commerce, their workload is increasing. For some reason, retailers tend to go for shorter models. Of course, with the rise of online shopping, there are plenty of jobs in the field."

It's not just e-commerce that is changing the game in the modeling industry. Magazine shoots are also becoming more diverse, albeit at a slower pace.

"The height and build requirements haven't changed much in terms of magazine shoots and fashion shows, but it's great that designers are now inviting curvy girls and older women to their shows too!"

Jowitt said, "The rise of Internet celebrities has also opened up a new arena for models. If the model has a good Instagram account and a lot of followers, it will definitely influence the final choice of the client."

How much do models earn?

While modeling can be a lucrative career, the reality can be a far cry from the high five-figure salaries of legends in the 1990s, and Graham confirms this.

"I started working when I was 18, and I earned very little for five years," she says. "I didn't make any money until the sixth year; I was ready to give up." What was the key to her success? A determination. "Working hard, believing in myself, never giving up, and having an agent who believes in me, that's why I'm successful today."

What's the best advice for aspiring models?

Jowitt points out that the key to success for models is to have a real understanding of the industry. "Look at the editors, photographers and creatives and other models around you: observe their movements, their behaviour and their walks."

She also recommends keeping your appearance clean at all times and promoting a healthy lifestyle. "It's not an easy task and requires a lot of commitment. Just like athletes and dancers, successful models must always look their best."

"Choosing to be a model isn't easy, but it's rewarding," Jowitt said. You'll work with a group of talented people, travel to amazing places and get paid very well. Every day is different. It has its hard times, but when the hard times are over, it can be a great career choice!"
