It's not enough to make a slogan T-shirt

The London-born Greek-born designer made history this week when she became the first person to show at the Temple of Poseidon, just outside Athens.

The money for admission to the event will be donated to children's cancer charity ELPIDA, and Mary Katrantzo explains the profound meaning behind the craft of high fashion.

Zeus, the Greek god of heaven and thunder, gave Mary Katrantzo a helping hand on Thursday when the storm broke and a new moon hung in the sky - just in time for her Spring/Summer 2020 show at the Temple of Poseidon.

For the first time, the Central Archaeological Council of Greece (KAS) and the Ministry of Culture have approved a private event at a UNESCO World Heritage site (one of Greece's 18 World Heritage sites, located just outside Athens) - an unprecedented and appropriately important fashion show in Katrantzo.

"The collection is based on ideas that came out of the construction of temples in Greece in the 5th century BC, from trigonometry to physics, biology to theology and philosophy; I wanted to show how ideas that go back 2,500 years are as present today as they were then."

The result was 38 completely unique dresses made using haute couture standards of craftsmanship.

"I don't think we need to do haute couture because we're not in Paris and we don't have a studio in Paris," she insists.

Instead, I want to create something very unique. Each piece is tailored, each piece has a different decoration, a different silhouette, a different embroidery to show these ideas, they come together to influence each other, and at the same time, they are unique.

A discus shaped dress, called Innovation, contains many inspirations: the mathematical constant pi, originally defined by Archimedes as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter; Illustrations of Athena (God of war) and Poseidon (God of the sea); Olive Branch this peace sign under the map of Greece.

All are given permanent life in the form of digital printing, sequins and beading.

As with many presentations, the dresses are accessorized with Bulgari jewelry and Ancient Greek Sandals.

The show opened with a monochrome pillar-shaped robe called Socrates and a quotation from the philosopher, in the form of handmade tassels and beads: "The only true wisdom is to know that you know nothing."

Models walked down The runway to a thrilling, no-win score by Oscar-winning composer Vangelis, who collaborated with Catranzo on Russell Malefant's contemporary dance work The Thread.

The pulsating electronic music, mixed with elements of Vangelis' score for the 10th anniversary Catranzo Spring/Summer 2018 show, added a sense of wonder to the show by mixing the spirit conveyed by the clothes and the original pillars of the 15 temples still standing.

One of the most touching aspects of the finale was the inclusion of a young cancer survivor in every model - just a few of the thousands of treatments offered by the Friends of Childhood Cancer Association (ELPIDA), which reminds the audience of the real reason for being here.

"The purpose of the show is to raise awareness and money for ELPIDA," Katrantzo said.

Donations for tickets to the event start at €1,000, with the proceeds going to the organization, which was founded 30 years ago by philanthropist Mariana Valtinoiannis, sitting in the front row.

"It's not enough to make a slogan T-shirt, my team and I want to do better; Really push the envelope in terms of innovation and design, "added Katrantzo.

"This is the first time I've done something back in Greece since I went to London, and the first time I've done something so connected to the Greek heritage. My emotions just exploded in an instant."
