Protect your eyesight from these four points

Are you aware of the importance of eye health? How often do you care about your eye health? Do you have regular visual function checks? Almost everyone will have eye health problems at some point in their life, so care for the eyes needs to start from everyone, only to protect the eyes, can go farther and see a brighter light.

Noun interpretation

Vision impairment refers to long-term blurred vision of distant objects or near objects, which can be divided into four types: blind, moderate and severe, mild and near vision impairment. Currently, 1.106 billion people worldwide are visually impaired, and this number continues to grow rapidly, with 1.758 billion people expected to be visually impaired by 2050.

Between two and three billion people need ongoing medical help to improve their vision in order to function and live properly, of which about 1.4 billion are nearsighted, 1 billion have presbyopia, and 146 million have diabetic retinopathy. 90 million children and adolescents are visually impaired, of whom 2 million are blind and 30 million have moderate to severe vision impairment.

Vision problems can be prevented or treated

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness, and about 100 million people have impaired vision due to cataracts, and cataract surgery can help restore vision for these patients. Uncorrected refractive error is the leading cause of vision loss, and these patients can restore vision by wearing the right glasses, contact lenses, or undergoing refractive surgery.

About 8 million people have vision loss due to age-related macular degeneration, and a large number of early stage patients need medical intervention to prevent further vision loss.

Four ways to protect your eyesight

World Eye Care Day advocates the "four Ps" (Prevent, Protect, Preserve, Prioritize) to prevent vision loss and protect, preserve and optimize vision.

Prevention of decline

A healthy lifestyle can prevent many eye diseases. A healthy and balanced diet is important for maintaining weight, controlling obesity, and preventing disease.

Intake of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, etc. can nourish the cornea and retina, delay the progression of cataracts, age-related macular disease and other diseases.

A healthy lifestyle includes quitting smoking and drinking, exercising properly, and controlling blood sugar, blood pressure, and lipid levels.

Protect eyesight

Protecting your eyes is just as important as living a healthy lifestyle. There are a few simple ways you can protect your eyes:

When performing work or activities that may cause eye injury, be sure to wear goggles to protect your eyes from UV rays, high temperatures, chemical or radioactive substances, splashing particles, etc.

■ Wash eye makeup
Residual cosmetics may cause eye irritation, dry eye surface, etc.
■ Reduce the use of electronic devices, moderate rest, avoid staring at the screen for a long time. Follow the "20-20-20" rule: After 20 minutes of work, focus on an object 6 meters away and let your eyes rest for 20 seconds.

Maintain vision

When was the last time you had your eyes examined?

We advocate regular systematic eye examination, inform the ophthalmologist of the detailed medical history and family history, and check the vision, eye pressure, and if necessary, dilate the eyes, so as to carry out eye health assessment, so as to detect some hidden eye diseases early, maintain the existing vision, and avoid vision loss.

Optimize vision

I hope you can work with your family, loved ones and friends to put eye health first and take care of your eyes as part of your life.

An eye exam is essential

An eye exam is required as part of a routine physical exam. If you already have an eye condition, you should follow up regularly with your ophthalmologist. Annual eye exams should be performed if:

■ Age 40 and above;
■ A family history of glaucoma;
■ Have high blood pressure or diabetes;
■ Long history of smoking;
■ High myopia;
■ See a doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as flashing, sudden vision loss, redness, eye pain, and iridescence (seeing colored circles around light).

Others should have an eye exam at least every two years.
