The former American policeman Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of killing George Floyd, has been stabbed in prison.
The US Bureau of Prisons confirmed that at around 12:30 noon local time on the 24th, an inmate was attacked in a federal correctional institution in Tucson, Arizona, and the prison staff responded and contained the incident, and the inmate was transported to a hospital for treatment and evaluation. A source said Chauvin was stabbed and seriously injured by another inmate serving his sentence.
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, an African-American man, was suffocated by Chauvin, a white police officer, on the street of Minneapolis, Minnesota, for more than nine minutes. In late 2021, Chauvin pleaded guilty to federal charges of violating Floyd's civil rights, admitting that he "intentionally used improper force to cause Floyd's death from bodily injuries." In July 2022, a U.S. District Court judge in Minnesota sentenced Chauvin to 21 years in prison for violating George Floyd's civil rights. Chauvin, 47, was sent from a maximum-security Minnesota prison to the Federal Correctional Facility in Tucson in August 2022.
It was the second major security incident at the Tucson Federal Correctional Facility, a medium security facility, in just over a year. In November, an inmate at the prison camp pulled out a gun and tried to shoot a visitor in the head. No one was hurt.
