Thailand plans to suspend gun licenses for a year

Thailand's Interior Minister Anutin has signed an order to suspend the issuance of gun licences for one year.

The Bangkok Post reported on November 23 that the secretary general of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Teresulli, said that the gun registration agency will stop issuing gun permits for one year.

The order is aimed at curbing gun violence. The relevant documents are being submitted to Thai Prime Minister Seta for approval.

According to the report, the ban will take effect the day after the Royal Gazette published the announcement. However, the gun control measure does not apply to state officials such as the police.

Sudipong, permanent secretary of the Home Ministry, said last week that he had instructed provincial governors to inform gun registration agencies to stop issuing permits. The authorities have also stopped issuing new licences to existing licence holders to import and sell imitation firearms.

Last month, there was a deadly shooting at the Siam Belle Palace shopping mall in Bangkok, in which a 14-year-old gunman opened fire on a crowd, killing three people and injuring five others, including one Chinese man killed and one Chinese man injured.
