Walmart was the world's largest company for the ninth year in a row, Amazon moved up to second place, and China's State Grid Corporation was third.

Petrochina and Sinopec ranked fourth and fifth respectively. Volkswagen (No. 8) overtook Toyota (No. 13) to reclaim the title of "world's largest automaker."

In terms of earnings, Saudi Aramco topped the list with about $105.4 billion in profit.

Apple was the second most profitable company, with profits of more than $94.6 billion, and Berkshire Hathaway was third with profits of about $89.8 billion.

Google parent Alphabet and Microsoft ranked fourth and fifth, with profits of more than $60 billion each. China's three largest commercial banks, Industrial, construction and agriculture, continued to rank among the top 10 most profitable banks, with Industrial and Commercial Bank of China reporting a profit of $54 billion.

Including companies from Taiwan, China has 145 companies on the list, and the number of large companies continues to top the list of countries. In contrast, the United States had 124 companies on the list, two more than the previous year.
