On the occasion of her 10th anniversary in the fashion industry, Simone Rocha will release a sustainable joint collection with H&M on March 11 - puffle-sleeve tulle dresses, chandelier earrings, pearl headbands and other beautiful pieces worth watching.
Simone Rocha graduated with a master's degree in fashion design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design ten years ago. She studied under the late Professor Louise Wilson and was involved in the preparation of her London Fashion Week debut show.
The Irish designer once showed at Fashion East, a fashion talent incubator founded by Lulu Kennedy, before striking out on her own.
Her romantic designs, full of contrasts and juxtaposes of visual elements, have attracted international retailers including Dover Street Market, MatchesFashion and Bergdorf Goodman, and even the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has included one of her dresses in its collection.
Of Rocha's more than 20 collections, a few are her favorites.
First, the Fall/Winter 2014 collection, inspired by Anne Boleyn, expressed "strength and directness"; The show, at the Tate Modern, was the last that Professor Wilson attended and meant a lot to Rocha.
This was followed by a spring/Summer 2016 collection inspired by the beauty of Japanese bondage (" I love the tension between provocation and poetry ") and a spring/Summer 2020 collection at Alexandra Palace, which presented "a traditional Irish tomboy style that contrasts with hand-woven raffia and delicate lace embroidery and organze."
Looking ahead to the next decade, Rocha's ambitious goal is to "continue to create collections that I can be proud of," in line with her father, designer John Rocha, who taught her to "stay true to yourself and your identity."
Ahead of Rocha and H&M's joint collection, which will be released on March 11, we spoke to the designer's close friends, family and partners to hear how they describe Rocha in their minds.
"Simone's designs are comfortable and gorgeous to wear, which is very rare for me. It gave me what a Taurus could only dream of. Her clothes are comfortable, stylish and show a deep awareness of her multi-layered, extra-dimensional self-image."
"I was lucky enough to go to every one of Simone's shows - I was at her house at the after-party with her amazing mother Odette and father John and I was so happy that I cried. Once, as we prepared to leave, my daughter Rainbow became captive to their Irish hospitality and begged Odette to let her 'come back to her bar!' '. The 2017 spring/summer show especially made my heart beat faster and excited. The dazzling flowers and lace contrasted with the harder lines -- flat boots, braided hair, one-shoulder outfits -- hot, sweet, and I wanted everything."
"Simone is a genius. Super talented, no ego, and super friendly. She not only creates unique clothing for women, but also makes women feel unique. Her clothes are beautifully decorated armor that makes you feel special. This is Simone. Both the clothes and the person make you feel seen and heard."
"We are very much in tune with the balance of motherhood and career. Wearing her clothes makes every day special, and we really need that right now. I love the fact that her clothes transcend age and shape and look amazing on any woman. And she designed the dress to wear is particularly simple, to the body set, is the perfect shape. One of the fondest memories of Simone is my daughter Cleo wearing a Simone Rocha dress for her Christmas photo shoot last year - she put it on and said, 'I look like a snowflake!' '"
"I met Simone at The Royal Oak pub in East London. I don't remember what we talked about, but I do remember we had a few glasses of Guinness. I really appreciate the relationship she has with the design team. She always has the balance and confidence to turn her ideas into clothes. Simone once made me a T-shirt out of photos taken by his partner Eoin on a night out. It always reminds me of the good times we had together, like when we shot the Autumn/Winter 2016 collection together in Dublin. We had a couple of glasses of Guinness, too!"
"As soon as I saw Simone's early collections, I immediately fell in love with the poetic design and exquisite details, and from the very beginning she created a world of her own. I placed an order for Colette and put up a Simone Rocha window in the store. I remember her arranging the flowers by herself, one by one -- it took a long time, but it worked so well. I will wear her clothes for many seasons after they come out, there are not many designers like that. Women feel special in Simone's clothes -- they're so romantic, feminine, but unconventional."
"Over the past decade, I have watched Simone grow as a designer, creating strongly feminine clothes with unwavering confidence. The opportunity to work closely with Simone to design her store is the most unforgettable memory for me. Together we designed the Mount Street store in London and then Worcester Street in New York. Seeing her open her third international store on Ice House Street in Hong Kong -- my home city, which I left for London in 1971 under special circumstances -- was a mixed experience."
"I met Simone in Dublin when she invited me to her studio in Ely Place, opposite the Royal Siberian Academy of Art. Stepping into that space is like stepping into an oasis of beauty and imagination. I immediately felt her creativity, skill, talent and the essence of her art. We then shot a spring/summer 2017 campaign in the Zambezi Valley in Africa, and the experience was amazing (even in 40 degree heat), and since then we have collaborated on various projects."
"I wore my first Simone Rocha, a beautiful black beaded gown, to the 2019 Fashion Awards and I remember not wanting to take it off. Pearls, embroidery and fabrics thrilled me when I was young and light, and those designs captured something of youth and innocence while adding power and darkness to make you feel powerful. I had the privilege of working with Simone and her team on the Spring/Summer 2021 collection and the H&M joint collection. I remember backstage thinking how wonderful it would have been as a child to see a group of female models of all ages, races, sizes and talents like us. I always hoped Simone would design the costumes for the ballet company one day."
"I admire Simone, she goes all out every season and tells interesting stories; I love how she works with all her heart and she never loses sight of what's real and important. She is a down-to-earth visionary who brings us one wonderful dream after another."
"In 2014, Karl Lagerfeld took me with him to see the LVMH Prize exhibition, knowing that I care about and am inspired by the younger generation of designers. He wheeled me over to Simone's display of dresses, which looked like dewy flowers. I admire Simone's gentle and delicate way of expressing power and concentration in her work. No wonder she was so passionate about artists like Dorothy Cross and Louise Bourgeois, both of whom explored home, family, sex, and the relationship between death and the body. We always meet at the Comme des Garcons show in Paris, and we're all in a kind of pilgrimage mood to get to know what we're feeling."
