Herm è s CEO Talks about Three Key Words for the Future: Beauty, Leather, and China

Beauty Makeup

In fiscal year 2018, perfume contributed 5% of Hermes' sales - sales increased by 8.4% year-on-year to 312 million euros, or 8.9% year-on-year at constant exchange rate.

In March this year, Hermes announced that it would officially launch its first beauty series in 2020. From the perspective of the launch order, the group would first launch cosmetics, then personal care products, and at the same time consolidate the existing perfume product line. (See "Glorious Chronicle" for details: Herm è s officially announces its entry into beauty, and will launch its first makeup collection in 2020)

Axel Dumas stated that the beauty product line is a long-term plan of the group and will be officially launched in 2020 as originally planned, but the product is still under development. "All large fashion groups have three axes (referring to makeup, perfume and personal care), which is also natural for us." It is reported that Hermes' cosmetics products will be produced in Italy and France, but the specific origin will be divided according to the products. He particularly pointed out that "color is unique to Herm è s at all levels.".

Axel Dumas said in a previous interview with French media: "In the long run, the realization of three major beauty categories going hand in hand will greatly enrich our distribution channels." perfume and watches are one of the few Hermes products that are also sold through channels other than direct retail channels.

Axel Dumas pointed out that the plans related to the beauty product line are in line with Hermes Group's regional business strategy. The European market prefers perfume, the American market prefers cosmetics, and the Asian market prefers skin care products. "Becoming a global company in the beauty industry is also our goal."

The launch of the beauty product line at this time is also aimed at balancing the growth of various product categories within the group. "We are seeking uniform internal growth," Axel Dumas said.

In April of this year, Axel Dumas withdrew from the board of directors of French beauty giant L'Oreal Group to avoid potential conflicts of interest. L'Oreal Group stated in an official statement at the time, "Herm è s Group recently announced that it will launch an independent beauty series, which may bring conflicts of interest to the two companies." (For details, please refer to "Glorious Chronicle": Herm è s is about to enter the beauty industry, and to avoid "conflicts of interest," its CEO has withdrawn from L'Oreal Group's board of directors.)

As one of Herm è s' most important raw materials, Axel Dumas said when asked how to slaughter and handle crocodiles, the rules set by the group are "much stricter than those set locally, and every farm will provide comprehensive animal welfare, which is one of Herm è s' basic requirements."

In 2015, Jane Birkin was very troubled when she saw a video released by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) about crocodiles being skinned and dismembered alive, and asked Herm è s to erase the crocodile skin version of the Birkin bag.
