Julio Cesar and Wes Morgan play for Manchester United legends

Julio Cesar and Wes Morgan played for Manchester United legends, although they never signed for the club

Manchester United have broken the golden rule of "legendary" matches by including Premier League champion Wes Morgan and former Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar in their squad

Playing in "Legends" matches for a Premier League club is a noble and rare honour - especially if you've never played for that team in your career.

But that didn't stop Wes Morgan and Julio Cesar from lining up for United in Doha on Saturday.

They are not the only unwritten rule breakers, as former Swansea winger Nathan Dyer also donned the iconic red shirt. Beyond that, there are some lesser-known faces that have earned teams draft picks in legendary football leagues.

Morgan, 39, captained Leicester City to a historic Premier League title just two years after they were promoted back to the top flight. However, with just one win in 11 meetings against the Red Devils, his record is still a bit to be desired.

Cesar, meanwhile, is best known for winning five Serie A titles and a Champions League with Inter Milan and making 87 appearances for Brazil. The 44-year-old spent two seasons at Queens Park Rangers but failed to beat United in four attempts (one draw).

Not that non-United members had much influence on the final scoreline in Dubai.

"Non-" United players can play, as the Legends Football League allows" impact players, "meaning current players or celebrities can play.

Patrice Evra and Dwight Yorke were among United's goalscorers, who also called on Dimitar Berbatov, Juan Sebastian Veron, Erik Jamba-Jamba, Antonio Valencia, Jesper Blomqvist, Danny Simpson, Wes Brown and Mikel Silvestre. Needless to say, more star names may be needed if the Legends are to progress in future tournaments.

More matches are planned in the UK, France and Qatar. But before heading to India in January, the Old Trafford ICONS may have to summon a few more bells and whistles to fill a team void.
