In the previous study, the team established a platform for enrichment, expansion and terminal differentiation of human erythroid progenitor cells, and initially achieved in vitro expansion of erythroid progenitor cells.

In this study, the team systematically explored and optimized the nutrients required for the terminal differentiation of red blood cells.

They found that physiological levels of metabolites and salt concentrations significantly enhanced erythroid progenitor cell proliferation and increased mature red blood cell production. Based on this, the researchers found that lipid metabolism plays an important role in the terminal differentiation of red blood cells,

and tried to use low density lipoprotein or cholesterol to completely replace human plasma and serum, successfully established a new chemical composition of the red blood cell induced differentiation system.

Liu Senquan said that compared with the traditional culture system, the serum-free red blood cell induced differentiation system is not only expected to greatly improve the production efficiency of red blood cells in vitro,
