Tang Xiaoou, an artificial intelligence scientist, died of illness

On the afternoon of the 16th, Sensetime announced an obituary: Sensetime founder, artificial intelligence scientist, director of Pujiang Laboratory, director of Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and professor Tang Xiaoou of the Chinese University of Hong Kong died at 23:45 on December 15, 2023 due to ineffective medical treatment.

According to public information, Tang Xiaoou was born in Anshan, Liaoning province in 1968, graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1990, received a master's degree from the University of Rochester in 1991, and a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996, and then joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong to work, and founded the Multimedia laboratory of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also a member of the 14th CPPCC National Committee.

Tang Xiaoou is mainly engaged in the research of computer vision related fields, including multimedia, computer vision, pattern recognition and video processing, and is a "pioneer" and "pathfinder" of global face recognition technology.

In 2008, Tang Xiaoou worked in the Multimedia Integration Technology Research Office of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology as director and researcher. In 2009, he established a joint laboratory based on the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology and was elected as a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

In the same year, Tang Xiaoou et al. 's paper "Single Image Defogging Technology Based on Dark primary Colors" won the "Best Paper Award" of the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), a top international conference. This is the first time an Asian scholar has won the highest honor in the 25 years since the conference was founded.

In March 2014, Tang Xiaoou's team released research results, based on the original face recognition algorithm, the accuracy rate reached 98.52%, surpassing the human eye recognition ability (97.53%) for the first time.

In 2016, the Chinese artificial intelligence team led by Tang Xiaoou was selected as the world's top ten artificial intelligence pioneer laboratories, becoming the only laboratory selected in Asia.

In July this year, the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference opened in Shanghai, Tang Xiaoou said in his speech: "Every night before going to bed, I listen to teacher Yu Qian's crosstalk, and think: 'How can a machine exceed such an interesting soul? I don't believe it. '"
