From December 1 to 3, the 2023 Tengchong Scientists Forum with the theme of "Science · Green Development" was held, and more than 2,000 top scientists, entrepreneurs, educators, representatives of the financial sector and guests gathered in Tengchong to participate in the event.

For the first time, this forum established and awarded the "Tengchong Scientist Award" to encourage scientists who have made major breakthroughs in the frontiers of science and technology and promoted the progress of science and technology in the world.

The forum is hosted by Yunnan Provincial People's Government and China Association for Science and Technology. During the Forum, nearly 60 forums, seminars, round tables and other activities were held in parallel, covering many fields such as high-quality education development, international frontier science, biomedicine and health, and digital economy.

In order to promote the deep integration of science and technology and industry, and build a platform for scientists, entrepreneurs and financiers to communicate with each other, the Entrepreneur Innovation Forum was held at the same time. Dong Ming, CEO of Yunnan Baiyao, presided over the forum and shared experience and common development with the guests around technological innovation and enterprise development.

In the round table dialogue session, Zhang Ning, chief scientist of Yunnan Baiyao Group, shared that the development of new drugs requires technological and scientific breakthroughs, and how can Chinese pharmaceutical companies achieve the forefront of the world? The cooperation between Peking University and Yunnan Baiyao opens a new model of school-enterprise cooperation.

First of all, universities and pharmaceutical companies should strengthen division of labor and cooperation, schools should strengthen source innovation, pharmaceutical companies should strengthen market research, integrate the advantages of both sides, and lay out research and development that closely follows the market.

Second, we need to strengthen policy communication. As a highly regulated industry by the state, the development of the pharmaceutical industry needs to keep up with the national strategic needs and people's health needs.

Third, the development of medicine is inseparable from hospitals and clinicians. Yunnan Baiyao has made a lot of attempts in strengthening clinical research and doctor recommendation, and will increase investment in the future to create greater market value and economic value.

Finally, Zhang Ning called for creating an environment and atmosphere in line with the development of medicine with Chinese characteristics, so that China's pharmaceutical innovation can come to the forefront of the world.

At present, the Tengchong Scientists Forum has been successfully held for two sessions, known as the "Chinese science and Technology Davos Forum". It is also the first science and technology award established by a social force directly named after a border city in China.

The first Tengchong Science Award produced two winners, namely, Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, known as the "father of noninvasive birth test", and Professor Feng Zhang of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Chinese-American scientist and one of the internationally recognized pioneers of CRISPR-Cas gene editing technology.
