The universe is vast and mysterious. Since ancient times, mankind has never stopped exploring natural phenomena such as clouds, lightning, the sun, the moon and the stars, floods and earthquakes, in order to solve more unsolved mysteries and ultimately achieve the goal of accurately responding to natural disasters and scientifically utilizing natural resources.

Over the years, the frequent outbreak of severe earthquake disasters has made the word "earthquake" a lingering nightmare in people's hearts, and it affects people's sensitive hearts once mentioned.

This is a topic that makes people feel very heavy: Human beings have thousands of years of earthquake history, but the earthquake disaster prediction problem that has plagued us for thousands of years is still troubling us today - how does the earthquake happen,whether it can really be predicted... ?

Like other earthquake research scientists, Professor Gu Guohua has been exploring and trying to solve these major scientific problems since he took up this work,

in order to win the initiative in the inevitable natural disaster. Although human earthquake research has made remarkable achievements over the years, it has to be admitted that it is still a long way to go.

Stick to the original heart to do scientific research, live up to the youth exhibition process

In Professor Gu Guohua's scientific research career, realizing earthquake prediction and mitigating earthquake damage has always been an important goal of his earthquake research. Over the years, adhering to this scientific research concept,

Professor Gu Guohua has taken root in the research direction of earthquake prediction. "Use science to reduce the impact of earthquakes on production and life, and defend the rights of human survival," he has always walked in the line of earthquake research.

After graduating from the university of geodesy in 1968, in response to the call of the Party Central Committee to defend the Beijing-Tianjin area, he participated in the earthquake work, and then embarked on the road to explore the precursor deformation of a major earthquake.

Through traditional geodetic field leveling, laser range measurement and deformation station observation, he has obtained many observation results of crustal movement. In 1970, Professor Gu Guohua participated in the work of the Xinjiang Earthquake prediction test site organized by the Seismological Bureau.

Xinjiang is a vast area with few people, monitoring stations are very limited, and observation technology can not be compared with today. Several years of monitoring research in southern Xinjiang, the results are very limited,

but Gu Guohua still in the data analysis, the use of leveling results to calculate the method of ground tilt. This was the first time he broke through the traditional geodetic analysis and research methods.

It is worth mentioning that leveling observation of crustal vertical deformation played a certain role in the successful prediction of the 1975 Haicheng earthquake, which is a great encouragement to deformation survey workers.

In 1973, after Gu Guohua finished his work in Xinjiang, he began to work on earthquake analysis and prediction, which was the real beginning of his experience in earthquake prediction and prediction.

At that time, his work content was to analyze and process the observation data of topographic changes in North China, mainly the continuous observation data of stations, so he personally analyzed and obtained a lot of deformation anomalies before the Tangshan earthquake,

which provided a basis for making a certain degree of prediction before the unit earthquake. Looking back on that work experience, Gu Guohua is convinced that the abnormal phenomenon seen before the earthquake is not accidental, and also vaguely sees the hope of earthquake prediction exploration.
